Belated Birthday Post

When you turn 9 nine years old, and you're a boy, and your name is Derek, breakfast is a VERY BIG DEAL.  This mom got up with the sun to make sure that the waffles were mixed, the sausage cooked, the eggs fried, strawberries sliced, and the fresh cream whipped.  That all made for an extremely happy guy.  Add to that some new athletic apparel to wear to school and it was about as good as it gets.

LAter that day I brought the requested sports cupcakes to school (a re-visit of ones i made in 1st grade).  It was his friend, Mei-wa's birthday, too, so she brought the CapriSun and we brought the treats.

THank goodness there are only 24 kids in the class!  These suckers take forever to decorate!!

The class sings to Derek and Mei-Wa.
Brooke was along for the ride, of course.  She's looking back at some newly hatched ducks in an incubator.

A basketball for Derek.
We spent the whole afternoon and evening in the car heading up to Placerville for a weekend visit to Grandma and Grandpa's house.  Lucky Derek got to attend a Giants game with Auntie Erin, and scored this incredible ice cream cake from Grandma!

We just can't believe our little Mr. DooDoos is already 9 !  We can't wait for years more of silly jokes and stand-up, declarations of , "5 more girls like me now", and great sound effects from this kid!

Easter Picture Fail

It's always my intention to take Easter Sunday pictures BEFORE we head to church.  It never happens.  Ever.  And this year was no exception.  But really, when your husband is the bishop, and you (the mom) have to arrive early to practice with the girl you are accompanying during sacrament mtg., and you have four kids, one of which is a baby, and you decided that, being Easter, you should make hash browns, bacon and eggs for breakfast,  it's quite a miracle that we all got out the door at 8:15 a.m.  with actual clothes on.  (Disclaimer- the baby was still in her nightgown.)
Miraculously, we made it through church without any major stains, tears, food spills or wrinkling.  However, announcing to the children in the car on our way home that we would be taking pictures in the back yard, I was met with loud protests from Grayson, who, I discovered upon turning around at one of the red lights, had already taken off his bow tie, shoes and was well on his way with his shirt.  Upon arrival at the house, he promptly spilled an entire glass of water down his front (better than something sticky, I guess), messed up his hair, and stomped off to his room, announcing, for the second year in a row, that he wouldn't be joining us.
I went ahead anyway, as Derek dutifully headed to the bathroom to re- comb-over his hair tuck in his pants a little higher, and make sure that top button was tightly secured.  So, of course, Brooke, who had been an absolute angel up to this point, suddenly became fussy and refused to be cute for the pictures.  So here's what we ended up with:

I call this one :  "The Nose".  Although I am happy to finally be making an appearance in this blog.  Did I ever mention that my nose was broken during a basketball game many years ago?  Obviously, it was never set back properly.

She semi-humored us with a half-cry/half-smile in her super cute dress with the tulle layer underneath.

By this point Derek was done with the tucking and combing so he wanted in on the action, and of course, Grayson had a change of heart, but NOT with his bow-tie.

We gave it a few more tries, but Brooke just wouldn't cooperate.

They gave their best effort to make the baby smile, but alas, she would not.

On to the egg hunt, which always ends on the trampoline, where the kids can go through their candy and eat it unhindered from bossy adults who tell them to "Stop eating all that candy or you're going to get sick!"
Every easter picture should have a rusty old shed in the background, by the way.

Poor Carissa.  She exercised restraint with her candy, only to have it secretly taken by Grayson and another boy who was over for dinner later in the evening and secretly eaten on- you guessed it:  the trampoline.  I hooked her up with some sweet clearance candy today, though.

I should never give these boys this much sugar. Never.  Ever.  My bad.

Despite the failed photos and stolen candy, we really had an uplifting, inspirational and motivating Easter.  It was a much needed opportunity to reflect on that all-encompassing sacrifice made for us so long ago and to re-focus ourselves on things eternal and important.

Bee Sting!

Do you think Derek is allergic to bees?

SIMPLIFY

Simple Spring afternoons.  Warm weather, gentle breeze, happy kids, crawling baby, content mother.  Suddenly life doesn't seem so crazy and stressful.

If I could just remember these feelings during the rest of the day.........

Perfect Beach Day

We had an insanely warm and beautiful day a few Saturdays ago and we, along with the rest of LA county, headed to the beach!  We spent the most incredible day playing volleyball, football, digging, jumping waves, running on the bike path, and soaking up the warmth.  Unfortunately, these are the 3 pictures I managed to take that whole glorious day.

She didn't eat too much sand, but she sure loved touching it!

Dig, dig dig!  Throw sand, fight, dig more!  Busy boys dug a whole city into that sand.

Wolf Man

Derek joined Cub Scouts when he turned 8 last year and has come to thoroughly enjoy the program.  He has been incredibly lucky to have two well-prepared, always early, enthusiastic and fun scouting leaders in the Ravitch couple.  Although there are very few Scouts in our Stake, Derek continues to go faithfully each week and enjoys learning everything that Scouts learn!  A few weeks ago he earned his Wolf Badge at the Blue and Gold dinner.  Here are his Scout leaders presenting him with his award.I guess this is a scouting tradition, to also award the mom, but quite frankly, I did NOTHING to help him with this, other than wash his uniform and hot glue the troop numbers on the side and give him an occasional ride to church.  I think I ought to be a little more involved in the future.  My bad.  Anyway- I was awarded in front of everyone, and of course, the moment I sat down I realized I was wearing a dirty sweater that had been previously slimed by Brooke:  ketchup on the sleeve, some unidentified substance down the front- it was great.

Then Derek and his "troop"sang a really cute song they learned together.   These two boys represent all the wards in our stake except for one.  Sad.
The theme was Rodeo Round-up or something of the sort.  It was very cute and they had a rodeo pen set up in the middle of the floor for the boys to play some rodeo games, like roping a PVC pipe cow, tossing their hats on a cactus, etc.

They finished up with a relay between all the scouts that were present.  Derek's team won 3 times in a row!   We are so proud of Derek and his hard work.  Now it's on to the Pine Wood Derby!
And of course Brooke and Carissa were thrilled to be there!
